Public Education — Watauga, Ashe, Avery, & Johns

Children residing in Boone, Blowing Rock and the surrounding Watauga County may enroll in the schools directed by the Watauga County School system. These schools serve approximately 4,550 students in eight K-8 schools and one high school. Seven of the K-8 schools offer a Pre-Kindergarten program for four year olds. All eight of the K-8 schools have earned the honorary desigantion as a North Carolina Honor School of Excellence. Watauga High School is a North Carolina School of Distinction on the state ABC’s Report Card for 2004-2005.



Children living in Banner Elk and its surrounding communities may attend the Avery County Schools. This public educational system offers six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school serving the needs of approximately 2,300 children.



The Ashe County Schools serve those children is Jefferson, NC, and the surrounding communities with three elementary schools, one middle school, and a cental high school.



Bordering the High Country in eastern Tennesse is Johnson County, TN. Children in Johnson County may attend one of the six elementary schools. The county has one central middle school and one central high school for its students.
