Medical Care & Facilities

Our area is blessed with outstanding medical facilities, physicians, and support personnel. Because our area is a such desirable area in which to live and raise a family, some of the nation’s finest physicians have chosen to call the High Country home.

The Appalachian Regional Healthcare System was created in 2004 combining the efforts of Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville and Watauga Medical Center in Boone bringing the region’s health care to new levels which before were not possible. The combining of the resources and then joining with other partners, such as Appalachian State University, to work towards common goals and objectives has produced results that could not be achieved singularly. Appalachian Regional Healthcare remains committed to the values and guiding principles of compassion, integrity and excellence.

Built in 1999, Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital provides a comprehensive range of health care services and advanced technology. Cannon, located in Linville, NC, is a 25-bed critical access hospital located in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina offering Emergency Care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in addition to our full range of services and specialty care. In December, 2005, Cannon Memorial Hospital was designated as a Critical Access Hospital.

Watauga Medical Center is fully accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and licensed as a 117-bed regional referral medical complex, offering both primary and secondary acute and specialty care. In addition to the main hospital, the medical center includes the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center offering both radiation and chemotherapy on an outpatient basis. The Center is recognized as an approved community cancer care center by the American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Cancer.

Other units associated with Watauga Medical Center include: The Paul H. Broyhill Wellness and Rehabilitation Center; The Scott Mallard Kidney Dialysis Center, which provides end-stage renal dialysis on an outpatient and inpatient basis; Medical Center Home Health, which provides a full range of home care services; Blue Ridge Physical Therapy, which provides outpatient and sport related physical therapy; The Sanger Cardiology Clinic; and a branch of the Northwest Area Health Education Center.
