Ashe County is located in the Northwestern corner of North Carolina atop the Blue Ridge mountains. It is a place of scenic views, small towns, and welcoming people. Visitors come to Ashe County for the serenity of mountain cabins and the spirit of a shared community. They come to hike the hills, canoe the New River, and fish trout from spring fed streams. Unique to Ashe County are the The Churches of the Frescoes. Artist Ben Long created these beautiful works of art in two churches drawing thousands of visitors a year. Visitors can visit the frescoes at either location at the Holy Trinity in Glendale Springs or at St. Mary’s in West Jefferson. A Festival of the Frescoes is held at Holy Trinity Church in in October. The 2007 Festival is scheduled for October 4th from at 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Crafts, food, entertainment, a silent auction, plants, a quilt raffle, children’s activities and more are planned for this event. Found no where else in the world is Ashe County Cheese. The store and viewing room are open to visitors year around from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Saturday. Call (800) 445-1378 for more information. If you’re looking to find elbow room and a slower pace of life, night skies filled with a million stars instead of the glow of streetlights, and to hear the music of whippoorwill and hoot owl, then Ashe County may be the place for you! |
